South Korea scored a goal in injury time to complete a stunning 2-1 turnaround win over Portugal at the Education City Stadium in Doha in front of 44,097 fans to qualify to the Round of 16 along with the European side.
South Korea scored their winning goal in the 90’+1’ when Hwang Heechan shook the net sending them through to the Round of 16 over Uruguay, who up to that moment had been qualifying as they were leading Ghana.
Both finishing with four points, South Korea eliminated Uruguay, who blanked Ghana 2-0, on more goals scored as both had a similar goal difference. South Korea scored 4 goals and allowed 4 while Uruguay only scored 2 and allowed 2.
Portugal, who had already qualified by virtue of their two victories over Ghana and Uruguay, got on the scoreboard very early. Just five minutes had transpired when Ricardo Horta nailed in the opener. Pepe sent a long ball up front for Dalot who controlled deftly running up the right wing and making a back pass which was finished by Horta scoring his first international goal in his major tournament debut.
But Korea tied it in on a left foot shot within the penalty area by Kim Younggwon in the 27th minute.
The game appeared headed to a 1-1 final score until Hwang untied it to qualify South Korea.
South Korea will now face Group G winners, expected to be Brazil, on Monday, December 5. Portugal, as Group H winners will play Group G runners up on Tuesday, December 6.
