Man charged with drug trafficking manages to avoid serious penalty by pleading to lesser charge

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Lord’s Bank man initially charged with drug trafficking pleaded to a lesser charge this week and was given a fine.

Twenty-one-year-old Harrison Parks appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court charged with possession of controlled drugs with the intent to supply in relation to 62 grams of marijuana found in his possession during a police search.

In court he agreed with the facts read to him and pleaded guilty to possession simplitica; however, the prosecutor had to receive advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, because over 60 grams is considered trafficking, not possession.

After a 10-minute delay, the prosecutor returned to accept the plea and Parks was fined $600 plus $5.00 cost of court which he must pay by January 31, 2023 to pay, or face six months in prison.
