By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Everyone might be following the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but the Premier League of Belize’s Opening Championship is going to be decided tonight Saturday at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence when Altitude host Verdes in the second leg of the Finals.
The first match finished in a 1-1 draw at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio last Sunday.
Altitude played half of the game with only ten men after Colin Westby was unjustly red carded in 44th minute after referee Efren Guy showed him a second yellow card. Westby had been erroneously given the first yellow card when, as the officials later admitted upon review, it should have been issued to his teammate, captain Dalton Eiley. Altitude complained at the time but to no avail. The officials later decided that Westby’s ejection had been an error and he will be able to play tonight.
The goals in the first game were scored by Paraguayan Luis Ibarra for Verdes in the 71st minute and by Rene Leslie for Altitude in the 78th minute for the 1-1 draw.
According to Altitude, more than 1,000 tickets had been sold by Friday. Tickets were being sold for $20. After 5:00 today, they go up to $25 at the gate
Tonight, either Altitude or Verdes will celebrate. If necessary, the match will extend to extra time and penalties. The Final kicks off at 7:30 pm.
