By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele announced that the Government was deploying 10,000 troops to a suburb of San Salvador known to be a stronghold for gangs, Reuters report.
In March, Bukele began a crackdown on gangs in the Central American nation with a state of emergency that has since been extended every month.
“Soyapango is totally surrounded,” Bukele says referring to the municipality known to be a stronghold of the Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 gangs.
“8,500 soldiers and 1,500 agents have surrounded the city, while extraction teams from the police and the army are tasked with extricating all the gang members still there one by one,” he added.
Over 50,000 people have been detained since the crackdown on gangs began in the country.
