By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After scoring six goals in Russia 2018, England captain Harry Kane had gone blank in the 2022 World Cup until today when he scored the second goal in England’s 3-0 win over Senegal. The Round of 16 victory earned the Three Lions their quarterfinal ticket.

Many of 65,985 fans who had flocked to the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar, left early as England put away the game in just under an hour.

Senegal put up a good fight in the first half and created a number of opportunities trying to level England’s breaks, but after the first English goal they became subdued.

The England opener came in the 39th minute. The play developed all the way from the back on the left wing. Jude Bellingham crossed slightly backward to the penalty spot where Jordan Henderson just had to tip it with his left foot past the goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for the 1-0 lead.

Bellingham set up the second goal in the 45’+3’ working his way through the midfield among three Senegal players.  He then booted the ball upward on the left wing to Phil Foden who crossed to Harry Kane. The English skipper ran up into the penalty area, shaking off Abdou Diallo, and powering a low shot that sailed into the net beyond Mendy’s grasp.

Though he had played well in the previous games, that was Kane’s first goal in Qatar. Overall, though, today’s goal was his seventh goal in just ten games in two World Cups. Additionally, Kane has scored four goals in the European Championships.

Not happy with the 2-0 lead, England looked for another goal. And it was Kane who initiated the play that would put the icing on the cake in the 57th minute. When the ball reached Foden, he beat an opponent on the left wing and then nutmegged an opponent in passing the ball into the penalty area to Bubayo Saka who finished it off for the final 3-0 win.

For England, who won their only World Cup championship at home in 1966, they’ve now qualified to their eighth quarterfinals. In Russia, they reached the semifinals which they lost 2-1 to Croatia and then fell 2-0 to Belgium in the third-place match. It’s left to be seen how far they can reach this time around.

Their next match, in the quarterfinals, will pit them against World Champions France on Saturday, December 10, at 1:00 pm.
