CitCo ends Hurricane Lisa cleanup campaign

Posted: Monday, December 5, 2022. 10:32 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize City Council said it has ended its Hurricane Lisa-related clean-up campaign with more than three thousand loads of debris removed from the Old Capital’s streets between November 3 and 25, when the campaign officially ended.

According to Mayor Bernard Wagner, some 65 thousand tons of debris not limited to, but including fallen trees, wires, zinc, battered appliances, and other trash were removed with the assistance of many, including sister town councils and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing.

Wagner says City Hall is moving on to filling in the gaps with City residents, assisting with minor home repairs and food and supplies for the most vulnerable.

A notice from the Council indicates that residents should not place any still outstanding waste and debris on the open street, and that Belize Waste Control (BWC), the contracted sanitation company, should be contacted for such arrangements. Violators risk a fine of up to $500 (individual) or $2,000 (businesses).

So-called “white garbage” will be picked up on Wednesdays only moving forward in conjunction with BWC and subject to a fee by the assigned inspector if the garbage is more than a cubic yard.
