By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Brazil had a party blasting South Korea 4-1 in front of 43,847 fans at the 974 Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

Brazil simply enjoyed themselves in the first half of the Round of 16 match led by their talisman Neymar who could finally play after being out for two games injured since the first match. The Brazilians set up a show of jogo bonito, scored four goals in 36 minutes, slowed the motor down in the second half, and still cruised to a 4-1 victory.

Brazil took the lead in the seventh minute on a Vinicius Junior goal. Raphinha made a beautiful play on the right wing opening up the field, beating the defenders, and crossing the ball over to the left side for Vinicius who took his time, positioned himself, made the Korean goalkeeper Kim Seungggyu and the defenders commit themselves and then he placed the ball to the far right. 1-0, Brazil.

In the 10th minute, Brazil was awarded a penalty kick. In the 13th, Neymar ran up to the ball, stopped, Seunggyyu doubted for a split second and Neymar hit a soft shot to the right side. 2-0, Brazil. Neymar joined Pelé and Ronaldo as the only Brazilians to score in three World Cups.

Neymar has now scored 76 goals for Brazil. He is one shy of tying Pelé’s record of 77.

In the 29th, Richarlison worked up a beautiful goal, bobbing the ball with his head, made a pass, ran into the South Korea defensive area cutting in amidst the defenders, got back the ball on the run, and shot with his left foot for the 3-0 lead.

Then in the 36th, Lucas Paquetá hammered a right foot volley in the 36th for the 4-0 lead off a pass by Vinicius Jr.

Brazil lowered the pace of the match in the second half conceding the initiative to South Korea who got their consolidation goal in the 76th off a power shot from outside by Paik Seungho.

The only other time Brazil scored four goals in the opening half was in 1954 over Mexico. The final score was 5-0.

Brazil’s biggest victory was 7-1 over Sweden in 1950 when they also downed Spain 6-1. Of course, that tournament had a bad end with Brazil falling 2-1 to Uruguay in the final at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Brazil will play against Croatia in the quarterfinals at 9:00 am on Friday, December 9.
