International News: Canada imposes sanctions on Haitian elites

Posted: Monday, December 5, 2022. 9:47 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Canada imposed sanctions on 3 high-profile members of the economic elite in Haiti, accusing them of providing assistance to armed gangs, Reuters report.

Any assets of Gilbert Bigio, Reynold Deeb, and Sherif Abdallah in Canada will be frozen.

“Canada has reason to believe these individuals are using their status as high-profile members of the economic elite in Haiti to protect and enable the illegal activities of armed criminal gangs, including through money laundering and other acts of corruption,” Canada’s Foreign Ministry said.

Gangs in Haiti have taken control over areas in Haiti after the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise.

Since then, Prime Minister Ariel Henry has faced difficulties in restoring order.

On Friday, the U.S. also imposed sanctions on a current and a former Haitian senator, accusing the two politicians of engaging in international drug trafficking activities.
