By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Saturday, the Honduran government announced that it plans to suspend some constitutional rights in areas controlled by gangs, Reuters report.
This would occur under a National state of emergency for 30 days.
The state of emergency will be implemented on Tuesday in Tegucigalpa, and the northern city of San Pedro Sula.
“The partial state of exception will enter into force on Tuesday, December 6 at 6pm for thirty days, to promote the gradual activity of economic development, investment, commerce and in public spaces,” the country’s security secretariat said.
Residents in these areas have been suffering due to extortion or “war tax” that gangs offer protection or say that those who pay up will not be killed.
Gangs have burnt buses and killed drivers who refused to pay.
The latest measure is expected to be supported by the council of ministers and is part of President Xiomara Castro’s plan to deal with violent gangs.
