By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The final two games in the Round of 16 at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup will be played today, Tuesday.

With six teams already qualified to the Quarterfinals, the final two will result from today’s matches to complete the two brackets.

Spain will be challenged by across the Mediterranean Sea neighbours Morocco with whom they have a history of territorial occupation and tension dating back to 711. Their national football teams have only met three times with Spain having the upper hand in the 1962 Chile World Cup qualifiers winning 4-2 on aggregate and a controversial 2-2 draw in Russia 2018.

Spain, referred to as La Furia Roja (The Red Fury) go in as favourites, but Morocco, called the Atlas Lions, have been playing well and have surprised all, including the pundits, topping their group.

The match kicks off at 9:00 am at Education City Stadium in Doha which has a capacity for 44,677 fans.

The afternoon match might be the last time Cristiano Ronaldo suits up in a Portuguese jersey at a World Cup. For that not to happen, Portugal would have to defeat Switzerland in what is considered the most level game of the Round of 16, though the Portuguese are the odds-on favourites.

The Portugal-Switzerland match kicks off at 1:00 pm at the Lusail Stadium in Al Daayen. The Lusail is the biggest venue and according to FIFA has a capacity of 88,966. That stadium, where the final will be played, was filled to capacity for the Argentina-Mexico game which reported exactly 88,966 fan attendance.

The Netherlands, Argentina, France, and England have qualified for one of the brackets. The two that qualify today go into the Croatia and Brazil bracket.

After today’s games, the FIFA World Cup will have its first break and will resume on December 9 with the Quarterfinals.
