Morocco shocked Spain 3-0 in a penalty kicks shootout after 0-0 draw during 120 minutes and qualified for the World Cup Quarterfinals for the first time ever.
Neither team could unlock the other’s defensive wall, but in the shootout, Spain crumbled at the Education City Stadium in Doha in front 44,667 fans, mostly Moroccan supporters.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the star of the show stopping two penalty kicks, the post the other.
After Bounou stopped Spanish playmaker Sergio Busquets’ soft pat, Acraf Hakimi, a player born in Madrid, put away the game.
Before him Abdelhamid Sabiri and Hakim Ziyech had converted.
Pablo Sarabia hit the post while Carlos Soler and Busquets had their shot stopped by Bounou.
Moroccan player Badr Benoun had his shot stopped by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón as well.
Spain, one of the favourites to win it all, particularly after their spectacular 7-0 rout of Costa Rica, were sent packing and will have to wait for the next four years to try again.
Morocco will meet the winners of Portugal and Switzerland who play this afternoon at 1:00 pm.
Schedule:
Portugal vs Switzerland @ 1:00 pm Lusail Iconic Stadium in Al Daayen
