By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Over the weekend, several pelicans were found dead along Venezuela’s coast as an outbreak of bird flu has spread to the country, the Associated Press reports.
Bird flu alerts have also been issued in Peru and Ecuador as avian flu has been affecting migratory birds across North America and in many other countries in recent months.
The carcasses of the pelicans were found on beaches and some in protected areas.
Tests returned positive for the bird flu.
The Government has since imposed a 90-day quarantine in several areas and said that the National Institute of Agricultural Health will work to avoid its spread to birds of other species, especially those eaten by humans.
