By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, the U.S. Secret Service said that Chinese hackers stole tens of millions of dollars worth of U.S. COVID-19 relief benefits since the 2020, Reuters report.
While details were not shared, the Secret Service confirmed that the Chinese hacking team that is reportedly responsible is known as APT41 or Winnti.
Experts say that the group is a cybercriminal group that had conducted government-backed cyber intrusions and financially motivated data breaches.
In 2019 and 2020, some members of the group were indicted in the U.S. for spying on over 100 companies, including software development companies, telecommunications providers, and social media companies.
The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. says that China has “firmly opposed and cracked down on all forms of cyber theft and hacking,” and that it opposed the “groundless accusations” against the country on cyber security.
