Motorists complain over “sanctioned” drag racing on Hummingbird Highway

Posted: Tuesday, December 6, 2022. 12:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: As part of a car and trade show expo this past weekend, the Transport Department participated in and sanctioned a drag racing event in the village of Middlesex, Stann Creek District, between miles 24 and 25 on the Hummingbird Highway.

The blocking off of this section of the highway caused complaints on social media from motorists and from the Opposition’s Guardian newspaper, which charged that the Transport Department vehicle used in the race was obtained from the Caribbean Development Bank-funded road safety program intended to reduce causes of accidents on roadways which includes speeding, drinking and driving and distracted driving.

Minister of Transport and Stann Creek West area representative Rodwell Ferguson was personally present, lending a further air of official sanction.

Nonetheless, the inconvenience and apparent incongruence of drag racing on a recently repaired highway that carries traffic to and from the South was not lost on social media readers, including former Director of Health Services Dr Marvin Manzanero who was caught up in the roadblock while coming back from Placencia.
