By Breaking Belize News Staff: Forty-one-year-old Devon Jones is out on a three-year suspended sentence following a guilty plea for use of deadly means of harm in relation to a 2014 incident where he knocked down Francis Gill with his vehicle.
Jones and his attorney Orson Elrington appeared in the Supreme Court before Justice O’Neil Sandcroft for his sentencing hearing on Tuesday, where he learned that he would not be going to prison as long as he adheres to the court’s orders. Jones must attend anger management counseling for two years and refrain from being charged for any offense during his suspended sentence. He was also fined $4,000 which he must pay by December 2023.
Following the sentence, the victim’s brother Vaughn Gill, said that the sentence is appropriate because Francis Gill, who is now deceased, had already forgiven Jones prior to his passing. Gill said the suspended sentence keeps Jones’ family from being deprived of their loved one, which was a desirable outcome.
Jones was charged with attempted murder after knocking down Francis Gill with his SUV on August 30, 2014, while Gill stood outside of the popular restaurant Lee Chee on Freetown Road. Gill would later lose a leg to the injuries sustained in the incident. Gill had launched a civil claim against Jones which was successful and Jones was ordered to pay compensation, which he did before Gill was fatally shot back in 2018.
