By Breaking Belize News Staff: On Monday a Belize City resident who was awaiting an arraignment for a charge of threatening words eluded police at the courthouse. On Tuesday that man, 54-year-old Jorge Montero, received a fine for his escape.
Montero appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty to escaping lawful custody, but not guilty to threatening words.
When the Magistrate asked him why he escaped, he only replied that he was sorry.
Montero was fined $400 plus a $5.00 cost of court for the escape offense and was given until January 31 to pay or he will face 4 months in prison.
Bail was granted in the sum of $300 plus one surety of the same; however, Montero was unable to meet bail and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he is able to do so.
He is due back in court in January 2023.
