By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow is joining political heavyweights from around the world in Washington, District of Columbia, this week at the International Democrat Union (IDU) forum.
The IDU is an alliance of conservative and moderate political parties founded in 1983. Belize’s United Democratic Party (UDP) describes itself as a conservative, centre-right political party on the political spectrum and is a member of the IDU through its regional affiliate, the Caribbean Democrat Union (CDU).
The forum features a plethora of leaders who have or recently held power, including its chair, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Other listed speakers include Prime Minister Andrew Holness from Jamaica (whose Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is the sole CDU member currently in government), former Prime Minister Liz Truss of the United Kingdom, and former Vice President of the United States Mike Pence and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (both are members of the Republican Party, another founding IDU member).
Barrow says he “looks forward to this opportunity to discuss policy, network, and establish relationships that will serve the best interests of the United Democratic Party and Belize.”
