By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Government Minister, Sylvia Flores, passed away last night in Dangriga.

Minister of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology, Francis Fonseca extended condolences on her passing and reflected on her service to Belize.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hon. Sylvia Flores.  Hon. Sylvia lived a truly remarkable and trailblazing life of service to her Country,  Dangriga Community,  Church, Family, and Party,” Fonseca said.

Flores was the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives of Belize and also served as President of the Senate.

Flores also served as Mayor of Dangriga.

“She served in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Said Musa as both Minister of Human Development and Minister of Defence and National Emergency Management. She loved her Dangriga Community and touched the lives of many Belizeans,” Fonseca added.

Flores was a strong advocate for Education and Culture and was at the forefront of the work to establish Delille Academy in Dangriga and the Gulisi Primary School.

“She was a devout catholic who lived her faith much like the Father of the Nation Rt Hon. George Price.  Above all else, Hon. Sylvia was a kind,  caring, decent,  humble woman who lived her life for others,” Fonseca stated.

Fonseca says that he is honored to have served with Flores in the Cabinet and that she lived a life well lived.

Many other Belizeans including CEO Tanya Santos joined in extending sympathies to Flores’s family and friends.

“I am deeply saddened at the passing of Hon. Sylvia Flores, Ms. Syl. To me she was one of the few early trailblazing women in Belizean politics. She was one of the few a young girl like me could watch how a woman gets it done. I cherish the warm and powerful moments I spent with her, always willing to share wise words of guidance, advice and encouragement.”

Albert Area Representative, Tracy Panton also extended sympathies on Flores’s passing.

“A Life Well Lived. Thank you Hon Sylvia Flores for your Service to Belize. May your soul RIP and Rise in the Fullness of God’s Glory. My Heartfelt Condelences to your family and your family of friends.”
