By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, the Honduran Government mobilized thousands of police officers to areas controlled by gangs, Reuters report.
The measure comes as part of the State of Emergency imposed by President Xiomara Castro in an effort to crack down on gangs.
Several areas have been struggling with extortion and “war tax” that the Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 extort from individuals or businesses.
The gangs have killed drivers who refused to pay.
The measure suspends some constitutional rights in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula.
One thousand police officers have been deployed in each city, Honduran officials say.
The state of emergency allows authorities to arrest those deemed suspicious, along with “previously identified criminal individuals or groups,” without needing a warrant.
