New United States Ambassador to Belize Michelle Kwan says she had an ‘UnBelizeable’ first week on the job

By Benjamin Flowers: The United States’ new Ambassador to Belize, H.E. Michelle Kwan made her first public engagement on Wednesday, and gave the media her first impressions of Belize.

Kwan, speaking to the press following a candlelight vigil in Belmopan in commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, said that she arrived in Belize on December 2, and though she has only been in the country a short time, she has experienced a lot and is looking forward to experiencing more of Belize.

“It has been..as you say, UnBelizeable,” Kwan said. “The Belizeans have been so warm and so nice, and just a beautiful country. It’s not even five days yet and I feel right at home.”

Kwan also said that she intends to spend Christmas in Belize. Turning to her diplomatic work, Kwan said that she got straight to work upon her arrival, meeting with various entities and government ministers and discussing plans for future collaboration.

“We’re gonna strengthen the bond between the United States and Belize. To strengthen our cooperation, our mutual interest, and our friendships between our two countries,” Kwan said.

She stressed that the US and Belize have many shared values such as an emphasis on democracy and human rights, which was evidenced by the vigil taking a stand against gender-based violence. Kwan also said that she will be taking a special focus on youth-centered initiatives in areas such as education and social issues, as she has done in various other countries.

Kwan was officially appointed as Ambassador on October 7. She succeeds Ambassador H.E. Carlos Moreno who returned to the US in January 2017. In Moreno’s absence, the work of the embassy continued under Charge’ d’ Affaires Keith Gilges who took over in 2018, and Charge’ d’ Affaires Leyla Moses-Ones who succeeded Gilges in 2021.
