Gibnut Hunting season closed!

Posted: Friday, December 9, 2022. 10:32 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Forest Department within the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management reminds the public that the hunting season for Gibnut (Cuniculus Paca/Agouti Paca) is now closed.

The season remains closed as of December 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023. Any hunting or selling of gibnut is not allowed!

The Forest Department says that closed seasons for game species are necessary to give wildlife the opportunity to reproduce. If hunting occurs during closed seasons, it would result in a decline in wildlife population.

When we respect closed seasons, we assist in ensuring that wildlife populations remain healthy for the future.
