Man who stole zinc from police officer’s home sentenced to 7 years in jail

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man will be spending the next seven years at the Belize Central Prison after he was convicted of burglary this week.

Forty-two-year-old Dwayne Gentle appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, after stealing 20 sheets of zinc from the home of police sergeant Hendrick Williams, which had a value of $641.00.

Gentle pleaded guilty to burglary and was told that a conviction for burglary comes with a mandatory minimum seven-year sentence which can be extended to 10 years. He was further informed that magistrates have the discretion to impose a non-custodial sentence for first offenders; however, this is Gentle’s second conviction for burglary.

Gentle maintained his guilty plea but contended with the facts as presented to him in court, saying that he was never actually caught inside the house. He also told the court he did not know it was a police officer’s home that he was breaking into.

For his guilty plea, he was given the mandatory minimum sentence.
