Morocco made history in becoming the first African country to qualify for the World Cup Semifinals on a 1-0 win over Portugal at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha in front of 44,198 screaming fans.

The 42nd-minute goal by Youssef En-Nesyri scored off a superb header in the 42^nd minute and the goal held up to give Morocco then history victory.

Morocco withstood the siege mounted by Portugal from the moment star player Cristiano Ronaldo was inserted in the 51^st minute. Coach Fernando Santos had preferred 21-year-old Gonçalo Ramos who converted a hat-trick in their last games against Switzerland. But needing experience, coach Fernando Santos had no choice but to call on Cristiano. He might now be questioned if benching Cristiano was a good decision.

Morocco lost one man when Walid Cheddira was red carded in the 90’+3’.

Morocco will now face either England or World Champions France in the Semifinals.
