Ambergris Caye caretaker beat up and thrown overboard over “drugs”

By Aaron Humes: A caretaker of North Ambergris Caye lost his power saw to burglars, who also gave him a rough night on the sea on Saturday, police report.

The 68-year-old was at home in the area of Tranquility Bay when his sleep was disturbed by noise and a flash of light. He was quickly surrounded by three men who began questioning him about “drugs” in Kriol.

The victim said he told them that he does not do drugs and knows nothing about any drugs. He was not able to recognize any of the persons except to identify one as Hispanic and the others as dark-skinned.

The attackers would not take his word for it, police say, beating him up and one of them placed a knife to his throat. He was dragged to a nearby boat with three men aboard, one of whom carried what appeared to be an AK rifle. The questioning and beating resumed, with the men using the knife. They drove off about a mile into the sea where they continued beating him then threw him overboard and abandoned him, the boat speeding off to the south.

The victim said he was able to swim back to shore and return home, whereupon he was greeted with the loss of his $650 power saw.

Police continue their investigations.
