Colorado boy’s family seeking help to get him home after horse riding accident

By Aaron Humes: The mother of eight-year-old Stefan Keryan of Colorado, United States, is seeking assistance to get her son back home after a horseback riding accident while on a cruise vacation to Belize, according to Denver ABC affiliate KMGH-TV, Channel 7.

The Keryan family has launched a GoFundMe to cover the costs to get him home.

Stefan’s mother Heidi told a KMGH reporter that while stopping in Belize on a cruise vacation, they visited “a monkey sanctuary” – presumably referring to the Community Baboon Sanctuary in Double Head Cabbage, Belize District – and the tour included a horseback ride.

Heidi says she heard yelling and saw the horse that Stefan was on running toward them, with the saddle flipped and Stefan being dragged along by his foot. Someone was able to stop the horse after jumping into a car.

Heidi said Stefan is in a Belize hospital, fighting for his life, but she claims that the hospital does not have a specialist to treat burns, nor a plastic surgeon to fix the back of his head, or equipment or medicine, and the things she judges he needs to survive and heal. He suffered third-degree burns on his back, arms and legs, according to the GoFundMe page. He also lost a large portion of his scalp, requiring plastic surgery. A CT scan showed a skull fracture and a minor contusion at the back of his brain, but fortunately, there was no brain damage.

Most importantly, Heidi told KMGH, her youngster wants to go home, but his return will most likely be in a medical aircraft with medical personnel that can monitor him and administer his medications, watch his brain activity, and so on – which will cost up to US $50,000.
