Community Baboon Sanctuary, Tourism Board address reports of young tourist injured while horse-riding in Belize; investigations underway

Posted: Monday, December 12, 2022. 3:28 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Tourism Board and the Management of the Community Baboon Sanctuary have separately commented on the incident involving Stefan Keryan, eight, apparently dragged by a horse while on tour from a cruise ship.

Stefan sustained serious head injuries and his family sought assistance to transport him home by medical ambulance.

According to the Management of the Community Baboon Sanctuary, the incident took place on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 in Bermudian Landing, Belize District.

But it states that it was not involved and that the tour was a private one: “The Management of the CBS has been informed that the guests involved booked the horseback tour with a private tour operator located in the said village. This tour operator is not affiliated with, nor does the tour operator conduct tours on behalf of the CBS.”

Meanwhile, the Tourism Board confirmed it was aware of the incident but declined to discuss details, directing questions to Police as part of their ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, the CBS statement concluded, “The management and staff of the CBS extend our sincere thoughts and prayers to the child and his family, while we hope for a speedy recovery.”

The Tourism Board added, “The safety and security of all guests visiting Belize remain our top priority.”
