By Benjamin Flowers: The Community Policing unit of the Belize Police Department painted the houses of five Belmopan residents over the weekend.
Commander of the CPU, Assistant Commissioner of Police Howell Gillett, said that there were a total of 20 youth volunteers from the Methodist and Anglican churches in Belmopan, who took part in the initiative held on Saturday. Gillett said that the initiative forms a part of the greater push to foster a better relationship between residents and the police.
“When people think of the police, they think of us as only coming around to arrest someone. We want to shift that focus so they can see we are a part of the community,” Gillett said. “The estimated population of Belize is 400,000…we would be wrong to think we can do it alone.”
Gillett said that the next initiative will be the distribution of toys to children in Belize City, which is scheduled for Wednesday, December 14.
