By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Cyclist Alicia Thompson was elected president in elections held by the Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB) on Saturday at the Mexico Center in Belize City. She is also the first woman elected president of the CFB.

Thompson and her slate won over Tarique Cano and his slate in the elections that were delayed for two weeks. Outgoing president Orson Butler said the delay had to do with the nominations protocol not being followed properly.

Butler said that although two slates were nominated, elections were held for individual positions and not by slate. In the end however, the other members of the Thompson slate won for the positions of vice president, treasurer, and general secretary.

Thompson won over Cano 77 to 29 for the presidency. Glen Flowers was voted as vice president by a 72-31 vote over Kaya Cattouse, Allan Auil won for general secretary 66-22 over Karen Vernon, and Warren Coye triumphed over Troy Gabb Jr. for treasurer by a vote of 73-19.

The Committee Members are appointed positions, so Thompson proceeded to name the three persons who had already been named in her slate, namely Ronald Sutherland, Douglas Lamb, and Justin Williams.

Thompson and the new executive board were elected for a four-year term.

According to a social media post by the CFB, the new executive team is committed to the expansion of female participation, youth development programs, coaching seminars, an active racing season, the development of the national team, uniting cycling bodies, and creating opportunities for more international exposure.
