International News: U.S. charges 5 Russians, 2 Americans with conspiracy

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the United States charged 5 Russians and 2 Americans with conspiracy related to a global procurement and money-laundering scheme on behalf of the Russian government, Reuters report.

The U.S. Justice Department said that among those indicted is a suspected Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officer.

According to the report, those accused conspired to obtain military-grade and dual-use technologies from U.S. companies for Russia’s defense sector.

Four of the 5 Russians charged remain on the run, authorities said.

The indictment alleges the defendants unlawfully purchased and exported highly sensitive and heavily regulated electronic components, some of which can be used in the development of nuclear weapons.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, the U.S. and allies have imposed several sanctions on Russia.
