International News: Venezuela to fully open border with Colombia

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro announced that the country plans to fully open border crossings with Colombia commencing January 1, 2023, the Associated Press reports.

This move had previously been postponed due to turbulent relations between the 2 countries.

In 2019, the relations between the 2 neighbor countries was broken but Maduro indicated that ties could be improved with the election of Gustavo Petro as Colombia’s President.

In September, the countries resumed diplomatic relations.

“I am going to announce that we will be completely opening the border, for all of western Venezuela with Colombia, for the passage of vehicles, motorcycles, trucks” Maduro said.

“We are preparing everything to comply with what we announced, to fulfill what was promised to President Gustavo Petro,” he added.

Petro has officially recognized Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela.

Meanwhile, his predecessor, Iván Duque had said Maduro was returned to power in 2018 in fraudulent elections.
