By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On December 1, 2022, Itzamna Society Chairperson, Maria Garica signed a 5-year co-management agreement with the Government of Belize.
The updated co-management agreement formally recognizes Itzamna Society as the legal Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to continue the legal mandate to co-manage the Elijio Panti National Park.
Itzamna Socitey noted that the Elijio Panti National Park’s primary importance within Belize’s protected areas system lies in its position as part of the Maya Mountains Massif, forming part of the few remaining non-fragmented forest nodes in Central America.
The Elijio Panti National Park provides critical landscape function in the region by preserving regional biodiversity, watershed functionality and the preservation of natural and scenic values of national and cultural significance.
“Itzamna Society expresses its sincerest gratitude for the resources and support from all its partners in continuing to promote biodiversity conservation, cultural inheritance and community development,” Itzamna said in a statement.
