Special Envoy for Families and Children Rossana Briceño visits San Lazaro Festival del Pueblo, reflects on ‘beauty and richness of our cultural identity’

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children Rossana Briceño visited the San Lazaro Festival del Pueblo (People’s Festival) on Sunday and reflected on the ‘beauty and richness of our cultural identity’.

The Festival del Pueblo was the 11th being celebrated by the U Chan Muul Yaax K’aax History Museum of San Lazaro Lazaro in the Orange Walk District. The festival was held under the theme “Museum Culture Fest”.

“Grateful for her visit and work,” the San Lazaro U Chan Muul Yaax K’aax said in thahe Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children Rossana Briceño visited the San Lazaro Festival del Pueblo (People’s Festival) on Sunday and reflected on the ‘beauty and richness of our cultural identity’.

The Festival del Pueblo was the 11th being celebrated by the U Chan Muul Yaax K’aax History Museum of San Lazaro Lazaro in the Orange Walk District. The festival was held under the theme “Museum Culture Fest”.nking the Prime Minister’s wife, Rossana Briceño, who is the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, for her presence.

“Today, as I visited the Museum U Chan Muul Yaax K’aax in San Lazaro, Orange Walk, I reflected on the beauty and richness of our cultural identity. Culture has beautiful traditions as well as aspects that have not always allowed for women and girls to realize their true potential enjoying all their rights and privileges,” Special Envoy Briceño said.

“We must never forget cultural rights are human rights and women’s rights are as well human rights. The two are not opposed but mutually enriching… and as we live we inform our traditions with improved learning, appreciation and empathy. Our cultural identity is strengthened in that mutual support and respect of cultural and individual rights.”

Special Envoy Briceño acknowledged the work of U Chan Muul Yaax K’aax director Hugo Carrillo.

“I thank Mr. Hugo Carillo, Director of the Museum for his commitment to preserving culture through education,” Special Envoy Briceño said.

“It was with great pride and a commitment to both culture and gender that I listened, learned, viewed, and appreciated the presentation of the Alux artifact used by our ancestors to protect crops,”  Briceño said.

Special Envoy Briceño also thanked the Fototeca Tuzik group from Quintana Roo, Mexico, that made a presentation on Maya Identity, for their work in keeping “our cultural identity alive and strong”.
