Three producer organizations signed matching grant fund agreements with Government of Belize through Resilient Rural Belize

Contributed by the Ministry of Economic Development: On Tuesday December 13, 2022, the Conception Vegetable Farmers Cooperative Society Limited, the Northern Sustainable Agro-Producers Cooperative Society Limited, both of Corozal and the Seven Miles Farmer’s Association located in the Cayo District today signed Matching Grant Fund Agreements (MGA) with the Government of Belize (GOB) through the Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) program. The RRB program is funded by the GOB, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF).and is being implemented by the Ministry Economic Development (MED. The main objective of the MGAs is to provide resources and technical assistance to improve, in volume and quality, the three Producer Organizations’ (POs) agricultural production, organizational capacity and marketing/value added while safeguarding food security in the context of existing and projected climate change effects. The Matching Grant Fund is the main instrument through which this assistance is provided. The RRB The Conception Vegetable Farmers’ Cooperative Society Limited and the Northern Sustainable Agro-Producers Cooperative Society Limited are both Corozal Producer Organizations with the former being in the village of Conception and the latter in Patchakan Village. Both are primarily onion producers although they have expressed interest in venturing into the production of other vegetables as well. The Seven Miles Farmer’s Association produces vegetables such as tomatoes and sweet peppers and carrots primarily for the Cayo market. 

The Conception Vegetable Farmer’s Cooperative Society will receive a total of $240,000 for which the RRB project will contribute 85% and the Cooperative itself will contribute 10% in cash and 5% in kind towards the total. Likewise, the Northern Sustainable Agro-Producers Cooperative Society Limited will receive a total of $262,393.13 and the Seven Miles Farmer’s Association will receive $231,880.00 in the same proportion. In all, GOB through the RRB project will finance a total of $657,823.13 in resources to these three Cooperatives while the three Cooperatives themselves will contribute $113,777.00 towards the project. 

The funds provided will be used to build storage facilities for these POs as well as for the purchasing of greenhouses, solar water pumps and irrigation equipment to enhance their productive capacity. The RRB will also provide other resources to assist these POs in capacity building and in marketing and value added for their products. 

Signing on behalf of GOB was the CEO in the Ministry of Economic Development Dr. Osmond Martinez. Signing on behalf of the Conception Vegetable Farmer’s Cooperative Society Limited was its Chairman Mr. Orlando Ek; signing on behalf of the Northern Sustainable Agro-Producers Cooperative Society was its Chairperson Ms. Maria Yam and signing on behalf of the Seven Miles Farmer’s Association was its President Mr. Juan Lara.
