Community Police Unit distribute toys to over 100 Belize City children for Christmas

By Benjamin Flowers: The Community Policing Unit of the Belize Police Department held a Christmas party for Belize City children today, which saw over 100 children receive Christmas gifts.

The initiative, spearheaded by Officer Commanding the National Community Policing Unit, Assistant Commissioner of Police Howell Gillett, also had the following sponsors in attendance – His Excellency David Chien, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize, and Her Excellency Kate Reynolds, British Deputy High Commissioner.

Gillett said that the initiative is another in a long list of activities coming out of the Community Policing Unit, geared towards fostering better relations between the community and the police. He noted that a specific focus of the unit is to change the perception that inner-city youths have about police, viewing them as an enemy.

Gillett also acknowledged that the shift would not happen overnight, but that consistent outreach would make the difference in the long run.
