Suspected mental patient remanded to prison pending psychiatric evaluation

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A suspected mental patient was remanded to the Belize Central Prison this week, pending a psychiatric evaluation.

Harold Smith appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where a query about his age alerted the court to the possibility of mental defect.

The court inquired his age and he responded that he was 34; however, the date of birth he gave the court, March 5, 1971, meant that he should be 51 years old.

Smith continued to ramble incoherently, prompting the Magistrate to remand him to prison, without having the charge read to him.

Smith is due back in court on February 9, 2023.
