By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Ambassador Michelle Kwan and the U.S. Embassy in Belize handed over a donation of a U.S. funded CompStat building, 5 vehicles, office equipment including desktops, and laptops valued at $883,000 to the Belize Police Department.

“Since 2008 through CARSI, the Central America Regional Security Initiative and the International Narcotics Law enforcement, the U.S. has contributed roughly $38 million dollars and today is a big day in handing over $883,000 worth of vehicles and equipment. Citizen security and border security are shared challenges between the United States and Belize and these programs really help improve citizen security making sure that they are equipped,” Ambassador Kwan stated.

During her remarks, Ambassador Kwan underscored the important role that the Belize Police Department plays in citizen security and the continued support and collaboration of the U.S. Embassy with Belize.

“Today we continue that assistance (to the Belize Police Department) by providing 6 new desktop computers for the classrooms (National Police training academy). In 2015, the U.S. Embassy assisted in providing training to 28 police officers as well as advisors and since then the police department has trained over 350 new field training officers and 585 police recruits. Today, we are providing 75 new computers to be distributed countrywide for the field training officers to complete their daily observation reports and activities and reports,” Ambassador Kwan added.

The U.S. Embassy supports the Belize Police Department’s training unit including 2 advisors embedded in the National police training academy.

Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams extended gratitude to the U.S. Embassy in Belize for their generous donation and committed to compliance and accountability for the equipment given to the Belize Police Department.

Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, Kareem Musa emphasized the importance of community and police collaboration and thanked the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Government for their continued support through the Central American Regional Security Initiative (CARSI).

“Through funding from CARSI, the Belize Police Department is receiving robust strengthening at research, planning, legal affairs, and compliance branch, we are receiving a total of 2 pre fab buildings complete with office furniture, computers, desktops, and laptops with software along with 1 vehicle. This donation will no doubt enhance the unit’s ability to continue its critical work in the development of standardized policies and procedures providing heightened oversight and enforcement to ensure compliance by all ranks and to increase the professional capacity of all officers,” Minister Musa said.

The U.S. Embassy and the Belize Police Department continue to work together to improve citizen security.
