By Aaron Humes: On Tuesday, the Caye Caulker Village Council unveiled a recent holiday tradition – with an island twist.

The island’s Christmas tree, officially lit on Tuesday in front of the Village Council’s office on Front Street, is entirely recyclable – made from plastic bottles with ornaments made from old beer cans, boards, paint brushes, and so on.

The Council adopted a theme of “reuse, recycle, rejoice” as a way to promote their “go green” initiative and civic pride, according to member Tracie Young, whose portfolio includes promoting civic pride initiatives on La Isla Cariñosa.

“I thought that having a Christmas tree with recycled material and solar lights might be a good idea. Our team of workers helped us make the idea a reality,” she explained.

She added that “We have plastic bottles collection stations like this around the island, most of the bottles are recycled or returned to the bottling companies like Bowen and Bowen, however most are just destroyed.”

According to sources, modern Christmas trees originated during the Renaissance in early modern Germany, sometimes associated with Protestant Christian reformer Martin Luther, who is said to have first added lighted candles to an evergreen tree. The Christmas tree was first recorded to be used by German Lutherans in the 16th century, with records indicating that a Christmas tree was placed in the Cathedral of Strasbourg in 1539, under the leadership of the Protestant Reformer, Martin Bucer. The earliest known firmly dated representation of a Christmas tree is on the keystone sculpture of a private home in Turckheim, Alsace, modern France, in 1576.
