Guatemalan specialists share horticulture expertise with Belizean farmers, Ministry of Agriculture technicians at Central Farm

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Guatemalan specialists on Tuesday shared their horticulture expertise with Belizean farmers and Ministry of Agriculture technicians, according to a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

MAFSE said Antonio Freire who is a consultant and the general manager of J. Diez S.A., a Guatemalan company specializing in seeds, and Efrain Hernandez, a horticulture expert of the same company, made presentations on the tropical plant varieties being tested for adaptability in Peten which has similar agro climatic conditions as Belize.

“They expounded on the importance of the added advantage of utilizing seeds bred specifically for tropical conditions,” MAFSE said.

“Ingeniero Freire, whose specialization is in soils, also shared his experience with sustainable management of soil fertility, particularly, making informed decisions for nutrient management based on soil analysis and preserving and building soil organic matter.”

MAFSE said the visit of the Guatemalan experts results from several exchanges between officials from the Peten Agriculture Department and the Belize Ministry of Agriculture. These bilateral relations have the objective of sharing experience, knowledge, and expertise in areas of interest in agriculture.
