International News: Colombia to receive $55 million for peace from United Nations multi-donor fund

Posted: Thursday, December 15, 2022. 1:53 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, officials in Colombia announced that the country will receive $55 million from a United Nations multi-donor fund to help establish peace, Reuters report.

The fund was established in 2016 to support the peace agreement signed between the Colombian State with the now-demobilized Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas.

The fund has invested $181 million dollars so far.

Norway, Chile, South Korea and Britain are among countries supporting the fund.

“From the United Nations and with the support of all these countries, we will remain committed to Colombians to support them on the road to peace, with building truth and the search for reconciliation,” UN resident coordinator in Colombia Mireia Villar Forner said.

President Gustavo Petro has now committed to implement the peace accord which ended the FARC’s involvement in the country’s internal armed conflict.

President Petro wants to establish peace in the country including with the FARC groups and guerrillas as well as with criminal gangs involved in drug trafficking.
