International News: Migrants say kidnappings occurring in Mexico before crossing into the U.S.

Posted: Thursday, December 15, 2022. 10:02 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Nine migrants told Reuters that many of the migrants that crossed into the U.S. from Mexico this week had been kidnapped in Mexico.

The migrants say that they were multiple abductions in Durango, Mexico and the victims were taken to 2 main locations and held. The culprit/s demanded ransoms.

Migrants taking the journey to the United States are reminded of the dangers they face moving through areas where violence and drug crimes are prevalent.

Most of the kidnapped migrants were reportedly Nicaraguans who continue to trek to the U.S. in hopes of better opportunities.

In addition, migrants claim that people in police uniforms stopped the buses they were traveling in and attempted to extort them for between 200 pesos ($10) and 5,000 pesos ($255), before entire busloads were taken by armed men to nearby properties where they were held against their will.

Officials in Durango said that an investigation was not ongoing because they had not received any complaints but confirmed rescues had taken place on Dec. 5 and 7.

The Mexican Migration Institute (INM) said that along with the Army and National Guard it had freed more than 250 people from a property in the Durango on December 5, 2022.
