Belize exports 156 more head of cattle to Mexico pushing up 2022 total value to over BZ$6.4 million

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize exported 156 head of cattle to the SuKarne company in Mexico on Wednesday pushing the 2022 total livestock exported to the neighbouring country to 4,995, according to Belarmino Esquivel, Principal Agriculture Officer and Livestock Director at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

MAFSE said high quality livestock semen was also imported.

With the 156 livestock shipment, Belize has now exported approximately 2.997 million lbs. valued at approximately BZ$6.45 million to Mexico in 2022.

According to Esquivel, this last shipment of livestock with a total weight of 91,677 lbs. generated approximately BZ$200,000 in export earnings for Belizean cattle producers.

Belizean cattle farmers have been exporting through the Belize Livestock Producers Association to Mexican importing company SuKarne since 2021.

“In addition, 200 straws of high-quality bovine semen were successfully imported,” said MAFSE.

“These straws of semen will contribute to further enhance our bovine genetic pool in Belize.”

MAFSE said the livestock semen importation results from Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai’s recent visit to Tizimín in Mérida, Mexico.
