By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, Honduras signed an agreement with the United Nations paving the way for an international anti-corruption commission, Reuters report.
Foreign Minister of Honduras, Enrique Reina signed a memorandum of understanding in New York with U.N. Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenca, in the presence of U.N. chief Antonio Guterres and President Xiomara Castro.
President Castro committed to implementing new mechanisms to investigate widespread corruption where almost three-quarters of the population lives in poverty.
The next move would be for Honduras and the U.N. to sign a bilateral treaty for the anti-corruption commission to come into force.
The International Mission Against Corruption and Impunity (CICIH) will be the second such commission installed in Honduras.
