Kashief Gallego pleads guilty to manslaughter of Jermaine Franklin, receives a 30 years sentence

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Kashief Gallego, who was charged with the 2017 murder of Jermaine Franklin, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Gallego appeared in the Supreme Court today before Justice Susan Lamb. Justice Lamb explained that there were several factors she considered in making the decision to impose the 30-year sentence instead of a life sentence.

Justice Lamb said that aggravating factors included the fact that the offense was committed with a firearm and others were put at risk at the time of the incident. Mitigating factors included Gallego’s clean record and early guilty plea. Justice Lamb said that Gallego had no history of mental illness, and that she believed he could be rehabilitated.

For his early plea, 10 of his 30 years were deducted. Another five years, five months, and 22 days were also deducted for time served on remand. Gallego will be eligible for parole in the next nine years and six months, due to the deductions.

Gallego lay waited Franklin outside of Teddy’s Music Store on King Street in Belize City, on June 21, 2017. He opened fire on Franklin as he was leaving the store and hit him several times. Franklin tried to run away but collapsed a short distance from the music store, and Gallego reportedly walked up, stood over him, and fired several more shots.
