By Breaking Belize News Staff: Mexican national Juan Sanchez, a central figure of the November 2021 drug plane bust on the Southern Highway will go to trial next year.

Sanchez, a member of the group known as the Bladen 11, is accused of being the pilot who flew a twin-engine plane containing 20 bales of cocaine into Belize. He appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday along with his attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley, to learn that the court had accepted an application for a translator for the case since Sanchez speaks only Spanish.

In court, it was decided that the translator would be Police Corporal Jose Hernandez. The defense was also given disclosure which amounted to 633 pages. Sanchez must be apprised of the content of those 633 pages by the next court date, which has been set for February 15, 2023, when there will be a case management hearing.

There were nine people originally arrested in relation to the drug bust which occurred on Thursday, November 4, 2021. Three police officers and two Mennonites were among those arrested. Most of them are currently out on bail.
