Posted: Friday, December 16, 2022. 7:37 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Official funeral services for Sylvia Flores were held today in her native Dangriga, attended by dignitaries from the Government including the Governor-General and Prime Minister John Briceño.

The Prime Minister took to social media as he prayed for her soul’s rest, and expressed condolences and profound gratitude to the family who shared her with her nation.

Of the late educator, activist, and politician who achieved many firsts – the first female Mayor of Dangriga, the first female Minister of Defense among her service portfolios, the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives and President of the Senate, the Prime Minister said, “Sylvia Flores persevered, knowing full well that every trail she blazed was not for her or about her, she believed her efforts would deliver a better life for the young people of Dangriga and of Belize…. We remain in gratitude for her service to the nation and people. God rest her soul.”

Flores lived to the age of 71.
