By Aaron Humes: Breaking Belize News (BBN) has confirmed with our sources that by a narrow margin of 42 to 40, John Saldivar won today’s vote at the UDP National Party Council to be a candidate in the Belmopan constituency.
Thus, the December 2 decision of the Special Committee to disallow his candidacy is overruled, and he can contest the Belmopan convention on February 5.
Saldivar reacted on his Facebook page with a short statement: “God is good all the time! Justice prevailed!”
Vice-Chairman Alberto August was on the other side of the coin, quoting former Prime Minister and party leader Dean Barrow, “My heart weeps for the UDP.”
Meanwhile, parliamentarians Tracey Taegar-Panton and Patrick Faber weighed in on social media, heightening the sense of a party bitterly divided.
Taegar-Panton proclaimed she was βperturbedβ by the attitude in the virtual meeting room and βdisrespectβ she felt she had been subjected to, while Faber, it appears, was persona non grata despite being still a member of the Council as a sitting area representative.
