Former Mayor of Belmopan stands aside from candidacy for United Democratic Party

By Aaron Humes: Former Mayor of Belmopan and declared candidate for the United Democratic Party (UDP) as standard bearer for the constituency, Khalid Belisle has written to the party secretariat announcing he would stand aside and wishing his fellow candidates success.

Belisle was believed to be a protégé of former representative John Saldivar, though they were more recently reported to be at odds.
On social media, Belisle said he had taken his decision “after careful consideration and a multitude of discussions with those I have come to lean on for guidance over the years,” but did not specifically address why he stood down.

He indicated that he would go back to life as a private citizen but expressed his gratitude to all who worked with and supported him and the people of the capital, UDP supporters and otherwise.

With John Saldivar’s reinstatement, the race has three candidates, the others being former Government CEO George Lovell and businessman Emil Torres.

The constituency’s convention is expected to be held on February 5, 2023.
