2022 FIFA World Cup: Argentina captain Lionel Messi makes 26th World Cup appearance, sets new all-time record

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Argentina captain Lionel Messi is the new record holder of World Cup appearances. With today’s World Cup Final, Messi has now played 26 games in the World Cup, one more than previous record holder, Germany’s Lothar Matthaus.

Messi has played in five World Cups since 2006. Matthaus also played in five World Cups from 1982-to 1998.

Messi is the only player to have won the Golden Ball twice. He won the first one when Argentina finished second to Germany in Brazil 2014.

Messi is also Argentina’s World Cup goals record holder with 13. His goal in the Quarterfinal against Croatia had put him past previous holder Gabriel Batistuta who scored 10 in World Cup games for Argentina. Messi, who won the Golden Ball at the tournament’s MVP, scored seven in the Qatar World Cup.

Messi has now scored 98 goals in 172 international appearances for Argentina.
