By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Rural Transformation Oscar Requena on Monday donated pipes valued at more than $15,000 for a water expansion project to the Machakilha Village in the Toledo District.
“It was a donation as part of a community development project that was done earlier in the year,” said Ministry of Rural Transformation Chief Executive Officer Valentino Shal.
“We supported the electrification of the village. Part of that was building a small water system and they needed additional material, so we had said we would help them, and we did.
According to the Ministry, the solar-powered rural water system for the community to have access to water was started in June as a collaboration between the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Labour, and Local Government; the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program; and Plenty Belize Limited.
“Earlier in the year we inaugurated their solar project. They dug a well and installed a solar pump, and they have a small reservoir. They needed pipes to run the water, so we provided the material that they needed to run the water throughout the village,” Shal said.
According to CEO Shal, the Machakilha community will provide the labour to lay and connect the pipes to the homes.
