By Aaron Humes: The tourism sector is not immune to violent crime, with both tourists and Belizeans participating in the sector subject to robbery and murder.
While few statistics are available on exactly how much crime affects the sector which is Belize’s most economically profitable, stakeholders are interested in finding better ways of keeping those who visit our country safe while they are our guests.
The Belize Tourism Board is presently conducting countrywide tourism security assessments to develop a National Tourism Security Strategy.
During the assessment exercise in Western Belize Destinations this week, the BTB team also participated in discussions with local governments, the Institute of Archaeology, the Belize Defense Force, and the Belize Police Department.
No timeline has been set for the presentation of the strategy or its implementation.
